MF Architecture Wins the Spark:Spaces Silver Award for Fashion[ING] Objects

MF Architecture won the 2012 Spark:Spaces Silver Award for Fashion[ING] Objects in an international competition. “Fashion[ing] Objects” is an instrument for space, light, and threshold that creates maximal impact with minimal means by arranging and reconfiguring everyday objects in an unexpected and extraordinary way. The backdrop was commissioned for the 2012 Tribeza Style Week Fashion Show – the annual premier fashion event in Austin. The project had a budget of less than $10 per square foot and needed to be designed, fabricated, structurally supported, and fully installed within three weeks.

Course description : “The term “sustainability” can be elusive to even define, as it has become a ubiquitous “buzz word” in contemporary society. Nonetheless, the current energy crisis and environmental concerns have spawned a movement that directly affects daily life from clothing to housing to the shape of cities in the future. This course will balance theory and practice, as discussion topics will span from general principles of sustainability to specific historical and contemporary case study buildings, illustrating ways in which design can improve the quality of life.”

The symposium will continue through the course of the Fall 2012 semester and features lectures on a range of topics, each focused on energy research.

Construction underway on Horizon House in Elgin, Texas

Ground breaks at the Horizon House site this summer. The Horizon House is a 3,500 sf private home on a rolling rural site near Elgin, Texas that focuses itself towards prevailing breezes and uninhibited views toward a rain-fed pond on site.

Site visit for MF Architecture’s Fleming Residence design

MF Architecture is chosen to design and build a large residence + guest house on a 22 acre site in Wimberley, Texas. The site features a large cliff of rock outcroppings, offering sweeping vistas of the Texas hill country, optimal solar orientation, and strong breezes.

After a long semester of hard work for all involved, Fajkus’ technical communications studio “Food. Context. Tectonics.” draws to a close with spring semester final reviews. Each of the student teams designed a culinary arts college for the 2011-2012 ACSA/AISC Steel Design Student Competition. Best of luck to all students as they submit their competition entries.

Matt Fajkus receives Cale McDowell Award for Innovation in Undergraduate Studies

Matt Fajkus and Dr. Barbara Brown Wilson receive the Cale McDowell Award for Innovation in Undergraduate studies for their Summer 2 signature course entitled “Skyscrapers and Polar Bears: Perspectives on Sustainable Design.” The Cale McDowell Award is a university-wide award that is handed out once per year to encourage research or innovation that improves the University of Texas at Austin core curriculum. The two were recognized by Dean of Undergraduate Studies Paul Woodruff at a luncheon on May 7, 2012.
